Robin Swithinbank’s Instagram bio reads that he’s on the frontline of luxury journalism — a position he’s held fearlessly for the last 20 years. We managed to pry Robin away from New York Times, Hodinkee and GQ deadlines to talk about the changes he’s witnessed in the previous two decades, and the changes he sees coming. With the rise of sustainability and e-sports, through to the vulgarity of watches as an asset class and rebranding the secondary market, Robin has a well-informed take on the space that only experience can bring. Often we get swept up in the details of product and can forget to analyse the macro level – where the industry is going and what existential problems it faces — not with Robin. If you’re interested in the big picture on the business of watches, this is one you won’t want to miss.
